Nurses want law requiring patients to be told about staffing levels
TALLAHASSEE (Mark Hollis) Frank Genung, an intensive-care nurse at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, and Norma Moore, a registered nurse at the Florida Medical Center in Lauderdale Lakes, say people deserve to know more about what goes on inside a hospital before they are admitted to one.
Armed with studies showing a correlation between the quality of patient care and nurse staffing levels in hospitals, Genung and Moore joined a throng of nurses from throughout South Florida and elsewhere Wednesday in lobbying legislators to pass a "Patient Right to Know Act."
Bills sponsored by state Sen. Nan Rich, D-Weston, and Rep. Phillip Brutus, D-Miami, would require hospitals to make public, and post on a state Web site, how many patients on average each nurse cares for in a hospital unit, such as a surgical ward or trauma room.
The bills (SB 1358 and HB1605) also would require hospitals to publicize their nurse turnover and vacancy rates. And they would seek to protect nurses who blow the whistle on hospitals that report incorrect statistics...
